Abuja, May 22, 2018 (NAN) The Country Director, International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mr Dennis Zulu, says the tourism and transportation sectors in Nigeria can play a great role in the creation of jobs and wealth for the economy.
Zulu disclosed this at the tourism and transport summit and expo on Tuesday in Abuja.
The theme of the summit is: Tourism and Transportation: “The Key Sectors for Economic Diversification, Sustainable Growth and Development”.
Zulu said that tourism and transportation could play a great role in contributing to job creation and must be improved upon to develop the nation’s economy.
According to him, tourism had gone beyond looking at the potentials in the tourism sector only.
“ Nigerians must invest a lot in infrastructure and make sure that people are well trained in other to deliver as expected.
“Nigerians have a lot of potentials that were yet to be fully utilised as the success of Nigeria lies in the people themselves.
“We have not seen a lot of information coming out of Nigeria to showcase the tremendous sites it has across the country.
“The success of Nigeria tourism industry and transport industry lies in the hands of Nigerians themselves,“he said.
He advised Nigerians to explore and develop their own instead of going abroad to contribute to the economic growth of other nations.
Dr Mande Samaila, Dean, Post Graduate Studies of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), said that the two sectors were suffering a lot because there was no input from the body of knowledge.
“ When you look critically how many universities are running programmes in these sectors , “he said.
He said that there was a need for synergy between the academics and the participants on the field .
The don noted that stakeholders should be thinking of how to enhance the transportation sector and the tourism industry, because tourism is everything and everything is tourism.(NAN).
