Lagos, Sept. 25, 2017 (NAN) The President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), Margaret Binga, on Monday said the Federation has set up Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) in line with its world body’s projects.

Binga said in a statement that the initiative was in line with the World Taekwondo Federation’s directive to its affiliated countries.

“The THF is a vital project of the world body, established in 2016 to engage refugees in fitness, self-defence and self-belief through taekwondo.

“The WTF President, Chungwon Choue, invited leaders of National Associations to adopt the Charter on its important mission to render help to refugees and internally displaced people,’’ she said.

The NTF president said that there were no fewer than 20 million refugees worldwide, and many millions more displaced internally or seeking asylum.

Binga said Nigeria’s support for the charter was important owing to the country’s importance to the region.

“Being a mother of six and a successful taekwondo practitioner whose life has been touched by taekwondo, I support and endorse 100 per cent this humanitarian charter.

“This charter aims to demonstrate global support for the use of sports as an empowering tool for refugees worldwide, and to further convince global decision-makers to take concrete action in that sense,’’ she said.

Binga disclosed that a THF Charter programme would soon hold in Borno State.

“The Federation will be organising a workshop in Borno state. We will use the opportunity to visit IDP camps there and engage the refugees with taekwondo as a mean of learning the act of self-defence,’’ she said.(NAN)
