Niger govt. promulgates law banning wholesale felling of economic trees

Minna, Dec. 13, 2016 (NAN) The Niger Government has promulgated a law banning the wholesale felling of economic trees in the state.
Dr Aliyu Tangwari, the state Commissioner for Environment and Solid Mineral, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Tuesday.
Tangwari said the state government introduced the law to save various form of economy trees from destruction by residents in search of firewood.
He said that a task force had since been constituted to ensure the arrest and prosecution of persons suspected to be involved in the illegal business.
He explained that such persons would be fined N300,000 or made to spend three years in jail or both.
The commissioner said the state government would ensure that trees were protected from wanton destruction in all part of the state.
He stated that traditional rulers have been directed to ensure the safety of forests in their respective domains. (NAN)
