Summon

Minna, June 7, 2017 (NAN) The Niger State House of Assembly on Wednesday ordered the Commissioner of Works and Transport, Abdulmalik Cheche, to appear before its committee on works to explain irregularities in the handling of some projects.

The House passed the resolution after the committee presented a report of its oversight tour to some projects in Minna and environs.

Mr Mohammed Haruna, chairman of the committee, while presenting the report, had told his colleagues that the commissioner needed to explain why the contractor that handled the renovation of the Police Barracks had not returned to the site as directed.

“The committee, after discovering that the contractor did a shoddy job, directed the ministry to recall him, but during our visit, we found that the handler had not gone back to rectify areas he executed poorly.

“We also want the commissioner to explain why the committee was deceived into believing that the fencing of Air force Staff School had been 100 per cent completed. The truth is that work has not even commenced ,” he said.

The committee also wondered why Messrs Windcastle Nigeria, the firm handling the rehabilitation of Minna-Kateregi-Bida road were paid N246 million, representing 45 percent of the contract sum, for the “very little” work it did before the contract was terminated.

The Committee, however, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work on other projects, particularly the rehabilitation of Minna-Suleja road.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the House, after listening to the committee, adopted its recommendations and ordered the commissioner to appear on June 13.

NAN also reports that the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Ahmed Marafa, later read a letter from the governor notifying the House of the reinstatement of the suspended Chairman of Katcha Local Government, Alhaji Liman Dogo.

According to the letter, Dogo, who was accused of misappropriating some money, was cleared by an investigative panel set up by the state government. (NAN)
