Lagos, March 13, 2018 (NAN) Mrs Victoria Agodo, the pioneer Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation(NICO), on Tuesday advised the Federal Government to create a data bank for the documentation of the nation’s cultural information.
Agodo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that a portion of the institute’s building either in Lagos or Abuja could be earmarked for the storage of information.
She said that such information data would be on the nation’s culture.
She said that this was necessary to ensure the preservation and proper documentation of the nation’s rich and diverse culture.
According to her, such a data bank will curb the dearth of information on Nigeria’s rich culture, including the availability of the tangible and intangible aspects of culture.
“A cultural data bank is necessary for us, if truly we want our culture preserved like the developed countries.
“The developed countries have groomed their tourism industry through exploration of their culture.
“This culture data bank will house documents that have to do with information about every aspect of our culture.”
Agodo urged the government to establish a National Culture Foundation, which would drive cultural initiatives, talents and researches from individual Nigerians.
She said that such foundation would ensure the proper funding and development of such cultural initiatives in the country.
According to her, a board of directors can be created to determine the kind of cultural initiatives and researches to embark upon.
“The proposed national culture foundation is very important for the growth of the culture sector, because we have lots of ideas from intelligent Nigerians which are not reckoned with.
“Government must ensure that the nation’s culture is upheld so that the creative economy can be improved on,” Agodo said.(NAN)
