Yola, July 14, 2017 ( NAN) National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in collaboration with UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has called for adequate protection of Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDP) rights.
The organisations made the call in Yola on Friday at the end of midterm review meeting for IDPs Protection Monitors.
The Information Officer of NHRC, Fatima Yusuf, urged IDPs monitors in the North East and North Central to be thorough in reporting human rights and humanitarian challenges confronting IDPs.
Yusuf said there was need to take stock of activities of IDPs monitors in the field
with a view to identifying gaps and challenges that might affect performance.
She recalled that the NHRC and UNHCR entered into partnership in 2015 to monitor and report rights protection issues of IDPs in the country.
She added that the two organisations reviewed and assessed the performance of IDPs Monitors from Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states at the
midterm review meeting.
She explained that “the review meeting was to enable partners to outline corrective actions to ensure that the objective of the project was maximally actualised.”
The information officer said that aside from improving the lapses of monitors, the review meeting also served as learning process for stakeholders in the project.
She said that the observation and recommendations made by monitors based on their experiences in the field would suggest sustainability of the project, at the same time attract further support from partners.
The UNHCR representative in Yola, Mrs Veronica Yohana, said the reports submitted by the monitors would determine the nature of intervention that would be provided, and the nature of issues that would be presented globally.
Yohanna added that humanitarian services could be successfully rendered through collaboration, as cases referred to agencies were immediately attended to.
She reminded monitors that saving lives was promoting rights and called for more relief materials from government and stakeholders to alleviate the sufferings of IDPs. (NAN)
