Bauchi, May 23,2018(NAN) The Legal Director of a non-governmental organisation, Lawyers Alert, Mr Bamidele Jacobs, has called on journalists and lawyers in Bauchi state, to joint the crusade against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Jacobs made the call on Wednesday in Bauchi at a one- day training for stakeholders on GBV, organized by Rahma Women Development Programme, in partnership with Lawyers Alert.
He said lawyers and journalists needed to partner with Civil Society Organizations in bringing perpetrators of violence to book.
Jacob stressed the important role of investigative journalism, which he said would contribute in providing relevant information on such cases and perpetrators in the communities.
Jacob also reminded lawyers in the state to advocate for laws that had direct bearing on violation rights of persons in the state.
“We need many Lawyers, Media and CSO to join Lawyers Alert; the organization will take care of logistic requirements,” he said.
He said his organisation had developed a Web-based reporting tool on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), to ease reporting of cases.
“Lawyers Alert has developed a web-based reporting tool for easy reporting of GBV, either by referral or helping someone to report, which will hasten commencement of investigation on the issue,” he said.
He said that Lawyers Alert had worked on GBV project in about 20 states across the federation, adding that five more states had been added to the project.
According to him, the NGO will remain in the state to ensure that such cases were addressed and free legal services provided for voiceless members of the society.
Earlier, the Technical Officer, Rahma Women Development Programme, Mr Nachia Jonathan, had said that all hands must be on deck to ensure that members of the public were sensitized on issues of GBV. (NAN)
