Lagos, Nov.12, 2017 (NAN) Science Ambassadors and Home Edutainment Foundation, an NGO, on Sunday said it had trained over 300 Science teachers in Lagos State on practical usage of scientific methodologies.
Mrs Peace Nnabugwu, Coordinator of the NGO, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the five -day training ended on Friday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Nnabugwu said that the training would empower the teachers on how to teach students in simple scientific terms to make science more interesting.
She said the training captured science teachers in basic science, basic technology, chemistry, physics, computer science, biology and mathematics .
“We are contributing our quota in the education sector to ensure that our science teachers are abreast of modern scientific teaching techniques .
” Science is not abstract or history, so its teaching process has to be fun and interesting for absorption by the learners , who are the students in our case.
“An enthusiast teacher will influence a happy learning environment and with such a training , the number of students excelling in science will increase,” she said .
According to her , the teachers were taught on how to use household items and materials such as paper , syringe, cup of water , straw, among others, to improvise on practical science .
Nnabugwu said the training was conceived as a result of the lack of apparatus and science equipment in schools , which was affecting the process of teaching and learning of science .
“We cannot wait for the government to do everything, neither can we fold our hands and allow things to get worse for science, that is why we decide to organise such training , to at least, salvage the situation , ” she said .
The coordinator said the teachers were nominated by The Establishment and Pensions Office, Lagos State Ministry of Education.
According to her ,the training was supported by the UNILAG Faculty of Science while materials for the training were obtained from the Institute of Physics, United Kingdom.
Nnabugwu said the teachers were issued certificates and materials to aid their teaching.
In his reaction , Mr Adedoyin Adesina, Deputy Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) , Lagos State Chapter, told NAN that the training was laudable but advised that the venue should be decentralised for easy access to teachers.
He said teachers needed regular trainings, workshops and seminars to keep abreast of time.
“If you are not informed as a teacher , you will be deformed and if you do not broaden your horizon , you will be rattled by our 21st century students who are hyper digital , ” he said. (NAN)
