Clubs

Abuja, Oct. 20, 2017 (NAN) The Foundation for Economic Empowerment and Educational Development (FEED), an NGO, has established environmental clubs in Government Primary School and Government Secondary School in Chukuku, Kuje Area Council of FCT.
Mr Kelvins Dzeremo, the Executive Director of the organisation, made this known while speaking with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
He said that the clubs would help the students to understand the effect of climate change, while educating them on how to manage and protect their environment.
He said that scientific reports had indicated that no part of the world was immune to the consequences of climate change.
Dzeremo said that changes in rainfall patterns, drought, flooding, crop failure and low yield, outbreak of diseases, among others, were signs of the effect of climate change.
“It is, therefore, important for my organisation to collaborate with the community through the youths, using the schools as contact points.
“I strongly believe that when a student joins an environmental club in school; he or she will learn about climate change and share the information with the family.
“The efforts will as well help in spreading the information around the community.
“Above all, many things are at stake if mitigation and adaptive strategies are not taken. The best medium to form eco clubs for maximum impact is via schools and colleges.
“That will make the students to also understand that climate change exists and that it is a challenge they ought to face with knowledge to enable them to become better advocates of climate change and environmental protection.
“Students can be powerful advocates for conservation of natural resources and waste management.
“In fact, students may be able to help make this happen in a way which is even beyond the ability of most adults.
“Many adults are not ready to change but the students will try to ensure that their parents become more conscious of the environment,’’ he said.
Dzeremo said that the eco clubs had encouraged the students to think creatively, as they had been stimulated to apply their knowledge in their day-to-day activities.
He said that the efforts would also improve the students’ self-esteem, while impacting on their attitudes and actions in the society.
He said that the efforts would also promote environmental and climate literacy, while motivating the students to safeguard their environment. (NAN)
