Lagos, Jan. 5, 2016 (NAN) Mr Tajudeen Agbede, Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Chapter, has urged the union’s members to obey traffic regulations to prevent unnecessary crashes in this year.

Agbede, who gave the advice on Thursday in Lagos, also urged the members to ensure their vehicles were in good condition before embarking on a journey.

“We are going to give maximum support to all traffic agencies to ensure sanity on our roads.

“Members should follow the traffic rules and regulations to reduce crashes on the roads as the year trends.

“So, we enjoin all members to drive with care and avoid overloading during the year,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The chairman also appealed to members to avoid various traffic offences that could justify their arrest by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

According to him, some of the arrest made by the FRSC on the road can be avoided by the drivers.

He said that the FRSC during the Christmas holidays impounded 255 vehicles across the state for various offences.

“According to the Lagos Sector Commander, about 1,172 drivers were arrested for various traffic offences, while 255 vehicles were impounded.

“Sixty-one of the suspects were also charged to one of the three mobile courts where 58 were convicted and three of them discharged, according FRSC report which is not proper during the festive season,’’ he said.

Agbede appealed to members to shun vices such as speeding, travelling without spare tyres, overloading and driving without drivers’ license.

NAN reports that no fewer than 1,172 drivers were arrested during the Christmas holiday with less than 1,270 offences committed. (NAN)
