Abuja, Sept. 13, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Association of Nephrology Nurses (NANN), on Wednesday urged government at all levels to give necessary support to kidney patients to  enable them access adequate health care.

Nephrology is a branch of medical science that deals with kidney disease.

The President of the association, Mrs Hassana Mohammed, gave the advice at the 10th Annual National Conference of the association in Abuja.

Mohammed said the conference, with the theme: “The Burden and Incidence of acute kidney injury in children”, was aimed at providing evidence-based practice in managing the conditions associated with kidney disease.

She also called on the Federal and state governments to invest more on preventive nephrology, promote and ensure establishment of affordable and accessible centres for renal care.

Mohammed said that this could be done through tax waivers on consumables to make it easier for dialysis patients to access National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

She also urged government agencies to inaugurate a supervisory body in collaboration with the association, to monitor the services rendered in all the dialysis centres across the country to ensure standard.

Mohammed stated that it was regrettable that one in every 10 children in Nigeria was affected with some degree of kidney damage, adding that the condition remained on the increase.

She said that the association would use this year’s conference to set out targets and review activities of its members with a view to improving services. (NAN)
