Lafia, Aug. 15, 2017 (NAN) The National Directorate of Employment in Nasarawa State has commenced the training of 20 unemployed youths under its Advanced National Open Apprenticeship Scheme (A-NOAS), to make them self reliant.

The state Coordinator of NDE, Alhaji Dauda Wase, said this on Tuesday during the opening ceremony for a two-month free training programme for the beneficiaries in Lafia.

Wase said the exercise was a to upgrade the skills of participants, previously trained under the Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme, and would last for two months.

“This training will enhance their marketability and open doors for increased employment opportunities.

“The skills involved will include computer operations, networking and web designing, metal construction and fabrication.

“The training will sharpen previously acquired skills of the participants in their chosen vocations, using modern advanced methods of service delivery available in industries and corporate outfits.

“It is better for government to teach one how to catch fish than to give one fish to eat and I urge the youth not  to continue to wait for white collar job but to embrace skills acquisition for the overall development of the country.

“The training was part of the agency’s deliberate efforts to tackle the high rate of unemployment in which the situation has degenerated to anti-social activities such as violent crimes, insecurity, armed robbery and human trafficking.

Wase also disclosed that the organisation trained 30 school leavers and artisans on business skills under the agency’s Basic Business Training (BBT) in July, to enable them to be self reliant and contribute their quota to the development of the country.

The NDE state coordinator called on unemployed Nigerians to take advantage of the agency’s various skills acquisition programmes, to exit joblessness and improve on their standard of living.

He called for a synergy on job creation for all categories of unemployed persons.

Also, An Assistant Director in the NDE, Alhaji Suleiman Ajanah, enjoined the participants to take the training with all the seriousness it deserves, to justify government’s investment in it.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with newsmen, expressed the hope that at the end of the training, they would be equipped with skills that would make them self reliant and contribute their quota to national development.(NAN)
