Keffi (Nasarawa State) Feb, 15, 2017 (NAN) The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has begun a Strategic Training Workshop on International Public Sector Accounting System (IPSAS) Accrual Accounting For Accountants, to ensure best practices and reforms in public financial management.
The Acting Director General, National Directorate of Employment, Mr Kunle Obayan, made this known at the opening ceremony of the four-day workshop in Keffi on Wednesday.
Obayan said that the workshop was crucial to the present administration’s change agenda, saying that it would ensure successful implementation of current global reforms in financial management and public expenditure practices.
He explained that all public sector entities in Nigeria ought to have adopted the provision of IPSAS Accrual by 2016.
The acting director general said that the federal, states and local governments and all public sector entities should have since keyed into the new policy.
Obayan said that the NDE has over the years been battling with the increase in the rate of unemployment through various intervention strategies including skills acquisition, training, enterprise creation and transient job placement among others.
“Though the directorate has recorded appreciably positive impact on its job creation initiatives nationwide, a lot still needs to be accomplished, especially in accordance with the change Mantra of the present administration.
He said as professional accountants they are expected to use this rare opportunity to participate actively in the workshop for self-improvement.
The acting director-general said the NDE would ensure regular training and re-training of staff at all levels to enhance their productivity.
The Director of Finance of the Directorate, Mr Abubakar Fikpo, said the state offices presently maintained the Treasury Cash Books without adequately rendering of returns to the Headquarters.
“The new system recommends the maintenance of Treasury Analytical Cash Books and requires that return of income and expenditure and extraction of Trial Balance be rendered as a matter of priority on or before 10th of the following month,” he said. (NAN)
