Owerri, April 20, 2017 (NAN) Mrs Ijeoma Udensi, Chairman, Imo State Chapter, National Council of Women Societies, has called on women journalists to be more proactive in reporting issues affecting women such as female genital mutilation and domestic violence.
Udensi made the call at a one-day gender sensitive reporting workshop for women journalists in Owerri on Thursday.
She said that there was the need for women to be at the forefront of women advocacy initiatives for the achievement of gender mainstreaming.
She also called for women to be recognised especially in governance by giving them more leadership opportunities to enable them to use their leadership abilities.
In her address, the National Chairman of the National Association of women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole, said that the workshop was aimed at sharpening the skills of women journalists towards development.
Omowole said that the workshop would improve their reportorial abilities especially in gender sensitive issues.
She said that the training, which cuts across the five South -East states, would enhance the professional skills of the women.
Imo State Commissioner for Health, Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Njoku, called for synergy between women journalists and their male counterparts.
She also encouraged women journalists to do their best in their various assignments.
Njoku said that this would encourage other women to aspire to achieve greater things as well as facilitate achievement of gender equality.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Imo arm of NAWOJ, Mrs Florence Onwumere, commended the national executives of the association for organising the workshop in the state.
She also thanked the Imo First Lady for her support, while commending the women society groups for their contributions.
The state governor, Rochas Okorocha in his address said that contributions of women to the development of the society could not be downplayed.
Okorocha, represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Obinna Nshirim, said that it was in recognition of the roles of women that three key ministries of the state, Education, Health and Works were headed by women.
He advised the participants to be result-oriented. (NAN)
