NCWS urges women to embrace farming, boost food production

Wamba (Nasarawa State), April 24, 2017 (NAN) The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nasarawa State chapter, has urged Nigerians and especially women, to embrace farming to become self reliant and boost food production.

Mrs Aishatu Isah-Idoma, the NCWS state President, made the call on Monday in Wamba during a courtesy visit to Alhaji Shuaibu Wayo, the Chairman, Interim Management Committee, Wamba Local Government Area of the state.

Isah-Idoma said embracing agriculture and vocational skill acquisition would reduce poverty and improve the standard of living of women, as well as the socio-economic development of the country.

The NCWS state president said that her visit to Wamba was to thank women in the area for their support during and after elections.

Isah-Idoma urged the women to sustain the spirit of togetherness, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliation.

She said, “NCWS is not a political body, but it is out to protect the interest of women and support them when they face challenges and for them to sustain the spirit of togetherness, irrespective of their affiliations.

“We all know that women are very important in the society as we have contributed a lot to the development of the society.

‘’I urge us to continue to contribute to the development of our areas, the state and the country at large

“It is in view of this I want to appeal to women and other Nigerians to embrace agriculture, education, skill acquisition training programmes to become self reliant and to contribute to the development of the country.”

‘‘The importance of agriculture cannot be over-emphasised to the development of any society, hence the need for women to embrace it and other skills acquisition’’ she said

The NCWS president also appealed to the women to give priority to the education of their children for a better society.

According to her, education is the bedrock of any society, hence the need for parents to make it top priority for their children.

She also appealed to government at all levels to consider women for appointments to public office, for them to benefit from dividends of democracy.

Isah-Idoma, who identified office accommodationas the major challenges facing the NCWS appealed to well-meaning individuals to come to the aid of the society.

Responding, Wayo commended the society for the visit and promised to support the activities of women in the area.

He also said that the council would continue to initiate women friendly policies and programmes to better the lives of women. (NAN)
