Survey
Abuja, Dec 17, 2016 (NAN) Mr Peter Mashem, Public Relations Officer of Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBBRI ), says the institute has concluded a preliminary survey of pavement distress observed along the Lower Usuma Dam-Gurara Road, Abuja.
Mashem told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja, that the institute was directed by the Federal Capital Development Agency (FCDA) to carry out the investigation.
According to Mashem, the road which is a bituminous pavement is presently under reconstruction and pavement distresses along sections of the road are observed.
He said that the Lower Usuma Dam-Gurara Road is a 41.6 Kilometre single lane carriageway.
The road network was constructed initially as an access road for pipeline maintenance between Lower Usuma Dam in the FCT and Gurara Dam, Kaduna State, he said.
According to him, the roadway begins in Dutse, Bwari Area Council, FCT and terminates in Jere, Kaduna State.
He said that recently, rehabilitation works was carried out along the roadway but some of the patched sections developed potholes.
“The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the possible causes of the observed pavement distresses, and to recommend remedies to minimise distress of the pavement.
“A preliminary evaluation was conducted on the roadway and the purpose of the visual examination was to set up an effective testing procedure to determine the causes of failure.
“This is to provide additional support and alternate rehabilitation strategies.
“Various distress types were observed along the roadway and possible causes had also been presented. (NAN)
