Jos, Dec. 20, 2016 (NAN) The Nigerian Women of Journalist (NAWOJ) has tasked security agencies, the Judiciary and other relevant bodies to curb gender violence in the country.

Mrs Jenifer Yerima, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in Plateau, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Jos.

Yerima said the association was worried by the increasing cases of gender-based violence in parts of the country.

She said the dreams of many women have being truncated because of gender-based violence especially cases of wife battery, physical and psychological abuse and child rape due to delay in prosecution or prolonged court cases.

“Justice should be dispensed within the shortest time. NAWOJ is concerned that the security, judiciary and other relevant bodies cause unnecessary delay in prosecution and judgments thus risking the society by harbouring criminals.

“When perpetrators are involved in certain acts, prosecution and judgment should not be delayed, because the victims are being traumatised while this is done,’’ she said.

Yerima explained that the society should not label roles based on gender because violence starts from the home when parents give preferential treatment to the males and the girls are relegated to the background.

The NAWOJ chairperson also called for more public enlightenment on the need for young girls to speak up against any form of violence in school or at home to expose the culprits. (NAN)
