Brussels, May 24, 2017 (dpa/NAN) NATO member states have decided to formally join a U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State extremist group.

The decision is expected to be officially announced at a meeting of NATO leaders on Thursday.

The decision is meant to appease U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called for increased NATO engagement in the fight against terrorism.

Observers say the decision is political as all the 28 NATO member states are individually part of the coalition.

NATO is already aiding the fight against terrorism through information sharing and training local forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg had previously said, “there has been no discussion of engaging NATO in a combat role” if it officially joins the coalition. (dpa/NAN)
