Lafia, Aug. 23, 2017 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Government said on Wednesday that it would adopt a standard measure for packaging and selling of grains in all markets in the state.
Alhaji Tanko Zubairu, the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, announced this while receiving the House of Assembly Committee on Capital Market, Commerce and Industry in Lafia.
Zubairu, represented by Hajiya Ramatu Julde, a Director of Commerce in the ministry, said that the measure was aimed at creating enabling environment for farmers, and discouraging activities of middlemen.
He said that the measure would curtail the activities of middlemen who shortchanged farmers and buyers of grains, in a bid to make profit.
“First and foremost, we want to thank you for the oversight visit as part of your constitutional responsibilities.
“We are all aware that Gov. Tanko Al-Makura is doing his best in promoting the activities of commerce and industry in the state.
“That is why the state government has built modern markets across the state and Karu International Market and others.
“The intention of the state government is to fight unemployment, reduce youth restiveness, raise the revenue base of the individual and the government.
“I want to reiterate the state government’s commitment, under Al-Makura’s administration, to better the standard of living of the people, as well as boosting the socioeconomic activities through the development of markets.”
Zubairu said that the revenue profile of the state would soon be high and expressed optimism that the state would experience a boom when the economic activities improved.
Earlier, Alhaji Ibrahim Bala (APC-Keffi West), Chairman of the committee, said that the visit was meant to rub minds with the ministry, to boost business activities in the state.
He lauded the ministry for introducing the grains standard measures initiative, adding that it would go a long way to improve the standard of living of the farmers and buyers.
The lawmaker said that the assembly would continue to enact laws that would boost business and commercial activities in the state. (NAN)
