Nasarawa Govt to spend N479m on Bokoko bridge

Kokona (Nasarawa State), Nov. 8, 2016 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Government says it will spend about N479 million on the construction of Bokoko bridge linking communities in Kokona Local Government Area of the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Works and Housing, Mr Godwin Makeri, disclosed this on Tuesday when the state House of Assembly Committee on Works paid an oversight visit to the project.

Makeri commended the contractor for adhering to the job specification, adding that the bridge will soon be inaugurated to open up the rural communities.

“My honourable members, as we are all aware that the importance of embarking on the construction of roads and bridges by any government cannot be over-emphasised.

“Apart from boosting the socio-economic development and the revenue base of the state, it will also help in reducing the plight of the people.

“That is why the State Government has decided to embark on bridges and road construction across the state in order to fight poverty, youth restiveness and unemployment.

“I want to disclose to you that the bridge will cost the state government about N479 million and as you can see the work is almost completed,’’ the commissioner said.

He assured of the state government’s commitment to initiating projects that would touch on the lives of residents of the state for the overall development of the country.

Earlier, Mr Mohammed Udege-Okpoku (APC-Udege/ Loko), the Chairman of the state House of Assembly Committee on Works, said that the oversight visit was to enable the committee assess the 2016 budget performance of the ministry.

“We are here to see by ourselves what and what the ministry has done with the funds allocated to it in the 2016 budget with the view of addressing any challenge if discovered,” he said.

He commended the state government and the contractor for the quality work done and called for its sustenance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee also inspected the ongoing 7.1km Tudun Wada/Karshi road and the ongoing Mararaba new orange market bridge construction in Karu Local Government Area of the state. (NAN)
