Nasarawa Assembly tasks University management on accountability

Lafia, Aug. 29, 2017(NAN) Nasarawa State House of Assembly has urged the management of the state University, Keffi, to be prudent and transparent in resource management for optimum development of the of the education sector.

The Chairman, Assembly Committee on Education, Mr Daniel Ogazi (APC- Kokona East), made the remarks when members of the management led by its Registrar, Alhaji Bala Ahmed appeared before committee on Tuesday in Lafia.

Ogazi said that the invitation was part of the Assembly’s constitutional responsibilities in assessing the budget performance of the institution with the view of addressing any challenge, if discovered.

“Your invitation is not to witch-hunt but to assess your budget performance as you are all aware that it is part of our oversight function to check activities of any Ministries/Departments/Agencies to move the state to greater height.

“We are all aware of Gov. Tanko Almakura’s effort to improve on the standard of education in the state through his good education policies and programmes.

“It is the duty of all of us to complement his efforts by ensuring that the right thing is done by ensuring prudence and transparency in carrying out our duties in the interest of the education sector.

“It is in view of this that, we want to assure the people of the state assembly’s collaboration with the executive arm to tackle the challenges in the education sector and improve on its present standard,” he said.

He added that the committee would continue to embark on its oversight functions to ensure that the right thing was done to justify government’s huge investment in the sector.

“We will not fold our hands and watch anybody sabotage the efforts of the government towards improving the standards of education in the state,” he said.

The committee chairman reiterated the commitment of the legislators at enacting good laws that would have direct bearing on the lives of people of the state.

Responding, Ahmed, the Registrar, commended the committee for their efforts at improving the standard of education in the state.

He pledged the management’s commitment to be prudent in the management of resources to further improve the sector. (NAN)
