Nasarawa Assembly passes Geographic Information System Bill

Lafia, April 25, 2017 (NAN) The Nasarawa state House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the Nasarawa Geographic Information Service (NAGIS) bill into law to modernize land tenure system in the state.
The Deputy Speaker of the house, Mr Godiya Akwashiki, announced the passage during the plenary.
The passage followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Tanko Tunga, (APC-Awe North), during the house sitting in Lafia.
The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader of the house, Mr Peter Mbucho, (PDP-Akwanga North).
The deputy speaker said that the passage of the NAGIS bill would check illegal structures across the state and also seek to modernize land tenure system.
Akwashiki also said that NAGIS would also perform the function of preparation of planning scheme for resettlement of acquired land from natives after adequate payment of compensation.
“A bill for a law to provide for the establishment of the Nasarawa Geographic Information Service (NAGIS) and for other matters connected therewith is one of the sensitive bills that we pass into law today.
“As we are all aware that NAGIS will perform the functions with ease of granting of planning permission for development of structures, monitoring of development , street naming as well as provision of site, services and facilities.
“The bill would put the state in the limelight of globalization to facilitate easy access to information and transactions on land matter, as well boost the efficiency of land administration and Internally Generated Revenue, (IGR) of the state, ”he said.
According to him, “Everybody, including me that presided over today proceedings is equal before the law as far as the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy and other land matters are concerned.”
He said that the bill would reduce land crisis and boost the socio-economic development of the state.
The Deputy Speaker re-stated the commitment of the house to continue to enact laws that had direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state and the country.
The house unanimously passed the bill after the third reading.
The Deputy Speaker directed the assembly`s clerk to communicate the passage of the bill to the state Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for his assent. (NAN)
