Windhoek, Sept. 12, 2017 (Xinhua/NAN) The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) on Tuesday informed importers, vendors, patent owners and equipment manufacturers of telecommunication equipment to obtain a Type Approval certificate before their goods could
enter the country.
The Chief Executive Officer of CRAN, Festus Mbandeka, said in a statement that “the original equipment manufacturer outside Namibia may provide a letter of authorisation to local or third party to apply on their behalf.
“The letter of authorisation should clearly state the company’s name granted permission to apply for type approval in the Republic of Namibia on behalf of the equipment manufacturer.
“It is the responsibility of importers, vendors, patent owners and equipment manufacturers of telecommunication equipment to obtain a Type Approval certificate before their goods can be allowed into Namibia.
“Furthermore, the above-mentioned stakeholders need to submit test reports as outlined in the Type Approval application form.”
He explained that the purpose of the regulations was to ensure compliance of telecommunications equipment with international standards applicable in Namibia.
He noted that it was also to prevent sub-standard equipment that may present health and safety hazards to consumers from entering and being operated in Namibia.
The regulations also seek to protect consumers from products that are incompatible with local networks, as well as ensure that the operating frequency of telecommunications equipment is in conformance with national frequency band plan.
CRAN is the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia.
It is mandated to regulate telecommunication services and networks, broadcasting services, postal services and the use and allocation of radio spectrum. (Xinhua/NAN)
