Motorcyclist in court for allegedly absconding with loan

Lagos, March 15, 2017 (NAN) A motorcyclist, who allegedly defrauded a micro finance scheme under false pretences of using its loan to buy a motorcycle, on Wednesday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Oluwagbenga Awoyeye, 47, a resident of Femi Williams Street, Ota, Ogun, is being tried for fraud and stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused fraudulently obtained N60,000 from Bisimillahi Women Micro Empowerment Scheme in May, 2016, on Kuffo Street, Ayobo, Lagos.

“The accused obtained a loan from the complainant with an agreement to be paying N10,000 every week for a period of six months.

“Immediately the accused received the money, he absconded to an unknown destination.

“All efforts made to trace him proved unsuccessful until he was arrested after 10 months,” he said.

The offences contravene Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, according Nwosu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 312 prescribes 15 years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretences.

The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences, and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, adjourned the case to April 3 for mention. (NAN)
