Motorcyclist, 40, arraigned for allegedly snatching woman’s handbag

Lagos, Jan. 12, 2017 (NAN) A 40-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Abdulahi Lawal, who allegedly snatched a handbag containing N30,000, phone and other personal effects, was on Thursday released on N50, 000 bail.

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, granted the accused two sureties in like sum, who must be resident in Lagos.

They are also to provide evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

A resident of No. 1, Alfa Nla St., Agege, the accused, was arraigned for conspiracy and stealing which contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused conspired with another man still at large to steal a handbag containing a Lenovo phone valued at N17, 500, clothes and N30, 000 belonging to a woman, Rose Adegboye, Prosecutor Yomi Egunjobi said.

He told the court that the offence was committed on Dec. 14, 2016 at 9.30 p.m. at Modupe Ayoade Street, Alimosho, Lagos.

He alleged that the complainant’s handbag was snatched from her while returning from work.

“The accused and the accomplice, who were on the motorcycle, snatched Adegboye’s handbag while walking home from the office.

“The complainant raised an alarm and the accused was apprehended by a mob and brought to the police station while his accomplice escaped with the handbag.’’

The accused, however, denied the charges.

Under the Criminal Law, the accused may be sentenced to three years imprisonment on conviction.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Osinbajo, adjourned the case to Jan. 17 for mention. (NAN)
