Lagos, July 5, 2018 (NAN) Mrs Ronke Soyombo, the Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Lagos State Ministry of Education, on Thursday urged parents to monitor their children and wards’ activities on the internet.

Soyombo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that children must not be left unattended to when using the Information Communication Technology (ICT).

She said that many children were accessing wrong websites because of lack of monitoring and supervision.

According to her, parents must put security password on their mobile phones and gadgets whenever they are not around to monitor their children’s activities.

“If you leave your children alone, they will make mistakes, because many children are accessing wrong websites at the moment.

“You must also visit the websites that your children are browsing to know if they are safe or not.

“Parents must try and limit the use of internet by their underage children without supervision,” she said.

Soyombo said that parents should continue to support their children and create time to visit them in schools, check their performances and challenges.

“Many parents are not visiting their children in schools; they are leaving all the jobs to their house helps, drivers and nannies; this is not too good.

“The career mothers must create time out of no time for their children. They must talk to them and find out if they are being bullied in schools and having challenges.

“We are in an era where Lagos State is talking about safeguarding of children.

“Parents should not leave their children alone with their lesson teachers at home, without paying attention to what they are accessing.

“We must check what our children are accessing at all times and make sure they are things that will add value to their education,” she said.

The director-general urged students to use the internet facility for educational purposes only.

She said that the use of internet could make or mar students; urging them to apply its usage to improve them academically.

Soyombo also urged them to read ahead of time and be proactive and creative in their thoughts; noting that they should not fritter the resources at their disposal. (NAN)
