Dass (Bauchi State), March 15, 2017 (NAN) Mr Abubakar Ibrahim, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Coordinator, Dass Local Government Area, Bauchi State, says 351 communities will soon introduce group monetary contribution to construct modern laterines.

Ibrahim disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dass.

According to him, 90 people have been trained so far by UNICEF on the monetary contribution for the project.

The measure would go a long way to allow each household to have access to modern laterine within a short time frame, Ibrahim said.

He said that the programme, which was aimed at improving on hygiene and sanitation, would reduce diseases and bad odors emanating from toilets and drains, especially during rainy season.

“Three people have been trained in each community and that is how the training will continue till all the 351 communities in Dass are trained and put the training into practice.

“The purpose is to move a little from the traditional pit laterine to improved latrines to reduce diseases and collapse of pit toilets.

“Every community decides on the number of people to form a group ranging from 25 and above.

“Members will decide the method and mode of the contribution whether it will be weekly, monthly or daily contribution and the amount is also set by members of the community.

“Where the contribution seems to be on the high side, two households can divide the amount base on how much they are contributing.

“So whichever one they decide, two people will share the money to be able to make slaps, buy scouter toilet sit, nets and other things required to get the toilet properly done.

“This will enable each and every one to be able to construct the improved latrine without much struggle.”

Ibrahim said that in each community would select three stakeholders that could implement and organise the activity with the aim of extending it to all members of the community. (NAN)
