Abuja, Dec. 6, 2016 (NAN) Solomon Dalung, the Minister of Youths and Sports has pledged the ministry’s support to the upcoming launch of the “Nigeria Sports Book of Records’’ on outstanding sports men and women in Nigeria.
Receiving the book in Abuja, Dalung described it as a good work done on sports history, which needed to be encouraged.
He commended management of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) their partners for making the Nigeria Sports Compendium a reality.
“Looking through the book, it is a thorough work of research that has documented outstanding sports men and women in Nigeria.
“This is a book that reminds us of the performance of Nigerians in sporting activities both local, national and internationally,’’ he said.
Dalung said that lack of proper documentation and functional mechanism was a major setback on the development of Nigeria.
The minister said forming perception on young people depended largely on what they read which had been documented.
He said that the publication was a challenge to the Ministry of Education on the need to reintroduce history at all levels of learning.
Dalung stressed the need to resuscitate the reward system in Nigeria, adding that this would go a long way in honouring hard working people.
He said he had directed that a committee be constituted to plan for the book launch, adding that he would do his best to present the book to Nigerians.
Earlier, the Director-General of NTA, Yakubu Mohammed solicited the ministry’s support for the launch of the book.
Mohammed, while presenting the books to the minister earlier, said he was happy that the five years project had become a reality.
“The book is compiled by the NTA through its television enterprises and we solicit the support of the ministry to launch it,’’ he said.
Mohammed said that certificates would also be presented to all outstanding sports men and women that had made Nigeria proud and whose names were listed in the book. (NAN)
