Lagos, June 28, 2017 (NAN) Lagos-based MFM Football Club on Wednesday beat Sunshine Stars FC of Akure 2-1 at the Agege Stadium to further compound the woes of the relegation-threatened visitors.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigeria Professional Footbal League (NPFL) Match Day 26 fixture had MFM FC securing a double over the Sunshine Stars.

MFM FC had secured a lone goal victory over the Sunshine Stars in Akure in the first round of the league.

In the second meeting played after a heavy downpour, MFM FC scored first, through Tchato Giscard who scored with a stunning shot after a pass from Stanley Okorom.

The hosts were however made to wait till the 77th minute for the second goal.

Stephen Odey scored from the penalty kick spot after a Sunshine Stars defender handled a goalbound shot from Sikiru Olatunbosun.

Sunshine Stars scored in the fourth minute of second half added time, through Seyi Otegbeye who also scored a penalty kick, to make the scoreline look respectable.

Speaking after the match, the MFM FC Media Officer, Olawale Quadri, said the team was edging towards fulfilling its mandate of getting a ticket to play on the continent next season.

“We have vowed not to allow last season’s mistake to recur. What we need now is to focus on our games and ensure that we have the mandate fulfilled.

“We have said that we want to play on the continent next season, and we are now just some steps away from achieving that,’’ he said.

NAN reports that MFM now occupy second spot on the NPFL log with 43 points from 26 matches, after 13 wins, four draws and nine losses.

Sunshine Stars still maintain their 17th position in the 20-club NPFL.(NAN)
