Harmony
By Blessing Odega
Jos, July 27, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), has called on governments at all levels to create and implement policies that would engender industrial harmony in the health sector.
Mr Isaac Abbah, a member of the union, made the call on Thursday in Jos, in a keynote address at the National Executive Council meeting of NUAHP, held in the Plateau capital.
“Government must work out policies that engender harmony; it is the only way to tackle issues of inter-professional rivalry in the health sector,” he said.
Abbah, while noting that industrial disharmony had often exposed desperate patients to quacks, advised government to always be proactive and devise crises mitigation strategies.
“Government should encourage the act of collective bargaining. This is very important in mitigating disputes so that they do not snowball into unmanageable points,” he said.
Abbah bemoaned the decadence in the health sector, and called for urgent steps to improve facilities so as to maximise productivity and improve healthcare delivery.
He also called for implementation of clear promotion guidelines to boost morale and career growth in the sector.
Earlier, Dr. Ogbonna Chimela, NUAHP’s National President, had advised governments to involve all stakeholders in the formation of policies for the sector.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for the meeting is “Challenges of Industrial Disharmony in the Health Sector: The way forward”. (NAN)
