Port Harcourt, Sept. 22, 2017 (NAN) A media practitioner, Mr Chooks Oko, on Friday in Port Harcourt, urged media practitioners to imbibe business consciousness to be successful in the profession.

Oko made the call in a paper titled: “The Editor as a Businessman” which he presented at the ongoing 13th All Nigeria Editors’ Conference and Extraordinary Convention.

Oko, the Editor-in-Chief of Citizens Trumpet Newspaper, said it was important for media practitioners, especially editors to generate finances for their media organisations to thrive.

He added that “if media organisations must run, their editors need to know a bit about how to manage and generate finances.

“It is important that an editor should have his or her eyes, ears and intellect in the business side of the organisation, with focus toward growing the establishment.

“The media practitioner must learn how to make money, keep money, make the money to bring in more money, deploy money strategically and generally run a profitable business.”

The editor-in-chief said editors were saddled with responsibility to manage human and material resources to grow their workplaces.

He explained that a good editor must focus on news deadlines, welfare, production materials, logistics and seek revenue from sundry sources to boost income of the organisation.

According to him, a good editor must have leadership qualities, be courageous, visionary, creative and imaginative with good organisational ability.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the theme of the three-day convention is: “Nigerian Media: Balancing Professionalism Advocacy and Business”. (NAN)
