Lagos, March 9, 2018 (NAN) A 19-year-old mechanic, Adewale Adekaunsi, who allegedly attacked a 56-year-old woman and snatched her bag containing N100,000, was on Friday brought before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused, who is facing a two-count charge of assault and theft, pleaded innocence of the offences.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Uche Simeon, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 5 around 11:30 p.m. at Ira Quarters, Ojo, Lagos.
He told the court that the accused attacked the complainant, Mrs Roselyn Keminisene, who was returning from her shop and snatched her bag containing N100,000.
“Adekaunsi attacked the 56-year-old woman from the back in her neighbourhood, hit her severally on her right ear and snatched her bag containing proceeds of that day’s sales.
“The complainant raised alarm and people came to her rescue; the accused was caught while trying to jump over the fence of a deserted primary school,” he said.
The offences contravened Sections 171 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 171 stipulates three years imprisonment.
Magistrate A. A. Adesanya granted the accused N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties must be gainfully employed. One must be a relative of the accused and the other a clergyman.
He adjourned the case until May 2 for mention. (NAN)
