Ibadan, Sept 28, 2017(NAN) Mrs Olamaye Owoeye, a family and marriage counsellor, has attributed the rising rate of divorce in the country to lack of proper counselling of intending couples.

Owoeye told the News  Agency  of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Wednesday that yound couples should not ignore tips from marriage counsellors before the consummation of their marriages.

She said that some girls and even boys in their desperation ignored marriage  counselling and rushed into the union.

Owoeye said this attitude was responsible for inability of many intending couples to understand each other well.

She said counselling would make couples to prepare their mindset for likely challenges they could encounter and possible ways to surmount them.

“Counselling would also be an avenue for the two parties to know much about each other and be educated on the marriage institution,” she said.

Owoeye said that factors such as  lack of love, lack of endurance and impatience, which often characterised some  marriages, would be minimised if couples had consulted marriage counsellors.

Owoeye admonished female folks to refrain from prioritising social status in the choice they make, adding that marriages based on such a criterion could easily crash once things changed for the husband.

“Most girls go into marriage because of money and social status of the husband-to-be in the society and they opt for divorce once things change for the man because they are not ready to endure.

“So, girls should not prioritise money or other social status as basis for marriage, but true love,” she said.

The expert advised parents and relations of couples to mediate and resolve issues with couples when in dispute, saying separation or divorce could not the best of option.

She said that marriages were bound to have challenges and that endurance and understanding were essential for successful marriage. (NAN)
