Lagos, Feb.10, 2017 (NAN) A 28-year-old man, Tuesday Ekong, who allegedly stole three air conditioners, was on Friday in Lagos granted  N50, 000 bail.
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling asked Ekong to produce two sureties as part of the bail condition.
The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbule, said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The accused, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing, resides in Iju area of Lagos State.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose told the court that the accused conspired with some others still at large and committed the offence on Jan. 22 at Iju Water Works, Iju, Lagos.
He said that the accused stole three LG air conditioners valued at N150, 000, property of Lagos State Water Corporation, when they were contracted to clear the corporation site.
Okuoimose alleged that the accused was seen in the compound on a Sunday after they had finished clearing the site on Friday.
“Some neighbours approached them to ask why they were at the site on a Sunday, which was against the rule, and they gave some flimsy excuses.
“When the site manager noticed that the air conditioners had been stolen, he reported the matter to the police; on investigation, the accused was arrested,’’ he said. The offences contravene Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides a three-year jail term for offenders.
The magistrate adjourned the case till March 1, for mention. (NAN)
