Man bags 6 months imprisonment for stealing ATM card, cell phones

Abuja Aug. 7, 2018 (NAN) A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old man, Joseph Maigari, to six months imprisonment for stealing one ATM card and four cell phones.
The convict, who resides at Life Camp Extension, Abuja, was arraigned on a charge of theft.
The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however, gave the convict an option to pay N,6000 fine and ordered that the items recovered from him should be returned to the owner.
Ado advised Maigari to shun committing crime, adding that his punishment was to serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.
Before the judgement was delivered, the convict, who had pleaded guilty to the charge, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, told the court that one Helen Biodun, who resides in the same compound with the convict, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on Aug. 3.
Obatomi said that on the same day, while she was in her room sleeping, the convict broke into the room and stole one iPhone, Itel phone, one Samsung phone and a Lenovo phone.
The prosecutor said that Maigari also made away with the complainant’s First Bank ATM card.
Obatomi said that the convict fled the scene but was caught days later when Biodun saw him at Kado village, Abuja.
According to Obatomi, Biodun raised an alarm and Maigari was caught and when searched the Samsung cell phone and ATM card were found in his person.
The prosecutor said that the offence was punishable under Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
