Lagos, Feb. 5, 2018 (NAN) A 36-year-old man, Adeniyi Monsuru, who allegedly broke into a car with a master key and stole a phone worth N49,000, on Monday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Monsuru, who resides at No. 11, Olusanya St., Agege, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge bordering on stealing and breach of peace.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
But Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel insisted that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on Dec. 30 at Ogba Retail Market in Ikeja area.
Samuel told the court that the Monsuru opened a Nissan SUV with a master key and stole an Infinix phone valued at N49,000 from the car belonging to the Iyaloja of Ogba Retail Market (chairperson of the market).
“Unknown to Monsuru that the husband of the owner of the car and phone was in another car watching him.
“After he had stolen the phone, he took to his heels but was apprehended,’’ Samuel said.
The offence contravened Section 278 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence attracts a penalty of three years in jail on conviction.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs A. R. Onilogbo, granted the accused N100, 000 bail with two sureties in the same amount and adjourned the case until Feb. 21. (NAN)
