Lagos, Oct. 27, 2016 (NAN) A 25-year-old man simply identified as Yusuf Ganiyu, was on Thursday apprehended by security guards at the Yaba College of Technology for alleged pick-pocketing during the institution’s 2014/2015 convocation.

Ganiyu, who claimed to be a visitor, was caught in the act while trying to steal an android cell phone from a male student of the college, just as people were leaving the convocation grounds.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect was immediately taken to the college’s chief security officer’s office, where he was interrogated, from where he is expected to be transferred to the Sabo Police Station, Yaba.

Narrating the incident on condition of anonymity, the owner of the cell phone said he was making his way out of the convocation venue when he felt a hand inside his pocket and he immediately grabbed it and alerted a security guard.

NAN reports that when the security guard searched the suspect, a charm was found in his pocket.

“Please forgive me, I am not a thief. It is a mistake. I am not a student, I just came to observe the convocation,’’ Ganiyu pleaded.

Mr Charles Oni, the Director, Public Relations Unit of the College, who confirmed the incident, warned hoodlums to stay clear of the campus.

Oni told NAN that the suspect would be handed over to the Police for investigation and prosecution.

He said that the college had beefed-up its security, adding that anybody found wandering and trespassing would be apprehended and be made to face the law.

“The suspect is not one of our students and he was also not a guest.

“Any hoodlum found within the campus will be arrested and handed over to the police.

“We have stationed security guards in and around the college community to address situations like this.

“All miscreants and pick-pockets are advised to stay clear of our campus or have themselves to blame,’’ he added. (NAN)
