Man, 21, to spend 18 months in jail for house-breaking, theft

Mararaba, (Nasarawa State), Feb. 16, 2018 (NAN) A Mararaba Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State, on Friday sentenced a 21-year-old man, Zakali Garba, to 18 months imprisonment for house-breaking and theft.
The judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, convicted Garba as he admitted committing the offence and begged for leniency.
“Garba is hereby sentenced to eight months imprisonment or an option of N8, 000 fine for the offence of house-breaking.
“For the offence of theft, the accused is sentenced to 18 months imprisonment or N10,000 option of fine,’’ adding that the sentences are to run concurrently.
Shekarau ordered the convict to also pay N51, 000 as compensation and cost of the stolen three geese and two sheets of zinc.
The convict, who resides at Ruga, Mararaba, was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on house-breaking and theft.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Steve Kwaza, had told the court that one Okoli of same address with the convict, reported the matter at `A’ Police Division, Mararaba on Jan. 16, at about 1:30 p.m.
Kwaza said that the complainant alleged that the convict broke into his poultry house and stole valuable items worth N181,000.
“The items stolen include, three chickens, valued at N10,000, two zinc sheets at N15,000, three geese, at N36,000, and 12 pigeons at N120,000,” Kwaza said.
The prosecutor also said that the offences contravened Sections 347 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
