By Nana Musa
Abuja, Oct. 20, 2017 (NAN) A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a 21-year-old man, Usman Danbaba, to five months imprisonment for stealing a cell phone.
The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option of fine of N10, 000.
Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crimes, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other offenders.
Danbaba, who resides at Karmo Village, was convicted on a charge of stealing.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge and urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
The Prosecutor, Florence Avhioboh, had told the court that a tricycle rider, Ahmed Ali, of Jabi Daki-biyu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on Oct. 12.
Avhioboh said that the convict on the same day boarded the complainant’s tricycle and on their way the complainant discovered his phone was missing.
He said the convict tried to escape from the tricycle but was apprehended with the help of passersby.
The prosecutor said during police investigation the phone was recovered from the convict and he confessed to the crime.
Avhioboh said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
