Mararaba, (Nasarawa State), April 18, 2018 (NAN) A Mararaba Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State, on Wednesday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Nasiru Bala, to six months imprisonment for stealing a Honda Civic car worth N300,000.
The convict, a resident of One Man Village, Mararaba, had pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of theft and failure to appear in court as ordered, but begged for leniency.
The Judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, in passing sentence, however, gave Bala an option to pay N15, 000 fine and N15,000 as compensation.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Ejeh, earlier said that one Abubakar Haruna of Harf Plaza, Mararaba, reported the case at the `A’ Police Division, Mararaba, on April 3 at about 4: p.m.
“The complainant said that on the fateful day he parked his Honda Civic car with registration number-GWA628G valued at N300,000, and entered his shop at the above address.
“When he came out, he discovered that the car had been stolen and in the course of investigation, the defendant was arrested with the said car in his possession.
“However, the defendant was granted bail to avoid prolonged detention because of the general strike by judicial workers in the state, but he failed to show up on the adjourned date,”Ejeh said.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 136 of the Penal Code.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict is facing another trial with similar charges in the same court and was granted N200,000 bail. (NAN)
