Abuja, April 26, 2017 (NAN) A Grade 1 Area Court, Kado, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old man, Ado Adebayo, to one month imprisonment for attempted stealing.

Adebayo,  whose address is unknown, was arraigned for attempted stealing.

The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however, gave him an option of fine of N1,000.

Ado, who warned him to desist from committing crime, said the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others.

Just before the judgment was delivered, Adebayo, who had pleaded guilty to the charge, urged the court to temper justice with mercy, blaming the intent to steal on the economic situation in the country.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Judith Obatomi told the court that the accused was arrested by a police patrol team led by Sgt. Ikpe Adego, attached to Utako Police Station, Abuja, on April 17.

Obatomi said the accused was caught loitering where cars were parked and that a cutlass was found on him when he was arrested.

The offence contravened Section 95 of the Penal Code, Laws of the Federation. (NAN)
