London, May 4, 2017 (dpa/NAN) Polls opened for some 5,000 seats on 88 of the 418 local councils in Britain on Thursday as analysts watched for clues on how the country could vote in a general election on June 8.

Labour, the largest opposition party, is expected to lose many seats in the local and national elections, Thursday’s vote could provide a barometer of just how bad it could get for the party in the June election.

Eight English cities will also vote for directly elected mayors on not including London, which elected its mayor in 2016.

Most analysts expect a low turnout in the elections, which follow last year’s Brexit referendum and a general election in 2015, and will be followed by another general election five weeks later.

Prime Minister Theresa May has asked voters in the general election to back her “strong and stable” leadership of the country and her plans for Brexit negotiations with EU leaders. (dpa/NAN)
