Autonomy

Damaturu, Feb. 27, 2018 (NAN) A former Local Government Administrator in Yobe, Alhaji Adamu Musa, says if granted autonomy, local governments would improve security and reduce conflicts among communities.
Adamu, who stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Tuesday, insisted that local government’s autonomy “is key to community security.’’
According to him, the autonomy provides traditional rulers with relative power to monitor strange movements toward attainment of effective security in their domains.
“The autonomy will empower the local government councils and traditional rulers to also curtail the menace of Farmer/grazer conflicts,’’ he said.
The former administrator also said that local government autonomy would encourage accountability in the management of public resources.
“We witnessed that feat in previous local council administrations.
“The Local Government is closer to the people and the people are more opportuned to put pressure for accountability, as against the existing structure where the councils have been hijacked by the states,’’ he said.
According to him, employment opportunities, especially agriculture, would flourish better under a viable local government administration.
Adamu appealed to civil society organisations, traditional rulers and the electorate to put pressure on their legislators to support the passage of the Local Government Autonomy Bill by the National Assembly in order to bring functional government closer to the people. (NAN)
