Lafia, Nov. 3, 2017 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Chapter of Action Democratic Party (ADP), has called on the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) to conduct council election as directed by the court.
Yusuf Ishaku, Acting Chairman of party in the state made the call at a news conference in Lafia on Friday.
He said that the Governor, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, should adhere to the judgment of the court in order to ensure peace and stability in the state.
“The law court, saddled with the responsibility of interpreting the constitution, has done its job and the decision should be respected by all citizens, especially the leaders,”he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a state High Court sitting in Keffi had in November 2016 dissolved the IMC Chairmen and ordered the state government to conduct election within 140 days.
He urged the state government to set machinery in motion and release money to NASEIC for the conduct of the poll.
The acting chairman also advised the state government to ensure that elected officials were the ones controlling the affairs at the local government levels.
Ishaku said that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria did not recognise the appointment of persons to run the affairs at the local government levels outside elected officials.
The party chairman also said that the party was not in support of the attempt by the state government to sell some of the state government assets in Kaduna, Jos, Lagos and some parts of the state.
“Any responsible government should be thinking of consolidating on its achievements, if any, but not planning to sell the inheritance of the state.”
He called on the followers of the party in the state to remain calm and be law abiding for peaceful coexistence in the state. (NAN)
