Obi (Nasarawa State), July 23, 2018 (NAN) Alhaji Mohammed Iyimoga, the Chairman, Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, has advised the farmers and other people in the area to shun indiscriminate felling of trees to avoid flooding.

Iyimoga gave the advice on Monday while speaking with journalist in Obi, headquarters of the council.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on July 16, a down pour washed away a bridge linking Agwatashi/Agaza road in the area in which some houses were affected.

Iyimoga said that indiscriminate cutting down of trees was harmful to the environment, thereby affecting the lives of the people negatively.

“Trees that are supposed to control erosion as well as avert flooding are being cleared by some farmers and some people.

“It is in view of this that I want to appeal to the farmers and others to avoid indiscriminate felling of trees, in their interest and for the overall development of the area,” he said.

The chairman gave assurance that his administration would rebuild the collapsed bridge to boost the socio-economic activities of the people.

He, however, urged the people to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and to live in peace, irrespective of political and religious affiliations.

The chairman restated the commitment of the council to continue to initiate policies and programmes that would positively impact on the lives of the people.
