Kano, April 10, 2018 (NAN) The Coordinator, Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, in Kano, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, said on Tuesday that the council received 45 new cases in March.
Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that out of the 45 cases, 42 were on criminal matters, while three were civil cases.
He said that the council had successfully handled 16 out of the 45 cases, while the remaining were pending in law courts.
“During the period, the council completed 16 cases -15 criminal and one civil, while others are pending in courts,’’ Umar said.
He said that some of the civil cases received by the council were usually resolved out-of-court.
Umar explained that most of the civil cases were on non-payment of pension and retirement benefits, mostly by privately-owned companies and pension fund administrators.
He said that other cases were on land disputes, marriage and debts recovery.
Umar however said the criminal cases border on armed robbery, criminal breach of trust, homicide, rape and theft.
The coordinator said the council’s mandate was to offer free legal services and advice to those who could not afford to pay for such services.
Umar, however, noted that the major challenge facing the council was lack of fund and inadequate manpower.(NAN)
