Lagos, Aug. 16, 2018 (NAN) The Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Kweku Tandoh, says that Lagos State Government is supporting the maiden Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Media Marathon planned for December.
Tandoh made the assertion at a Media Parley organised by the NUJ Lagos Council on Thursday, held at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
He said the marathon was in line with the programmes of the Lagos State Government to promote tourism and sports, which the NUJ Lagos Council has keyed into.
“This is a good initiative of the Lagos State Council of NUJ, and the Lagos State Government is supporting the programme which is part of our agenda in marathon race project.
“The forthcoming event is coming at the right time because it will serve as part of buildup to the Lagos State Marathon activities,’’ he said.
The sports commission boss added that the Lagos State Government had directed the commission to fashion out sectional marathon race programmes to take place in various areas of the state.
According to him, a full-fledged office with members of staff would be in charge of organising and administering the road races in Lagos as part of the state government’s directives.
Tony Ubani, Chairman, Media Committee of the NUJ Media Marathon, said the 10km race would be open to all members of media houses and interested athletes.
Ubani said the idea was to showcase Lagos State in terms of tourism, adding that health fitness checks would be carried out on registered intending participants to determine their health status.
“The marathon is for our members, but we extended it to interested athletes to make it lively and competitive, however, their health status stands as a condition,’’ he said.
He said that the take-off point would be at Charleboy bus top and end in new Ikeja bus terminal, while there would be prizes for the first five male and five female winners.
Qasim Akinreti, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), said he was impressed with the NUJ Lagos Council for coming up with such a programme.
Akinreti urged members of the media and members of the union to come out en mass to identify and take part in the event.
“The Lagos council is a force to reckon with, they are taking the lead and being a pacesetter, they have always come up with good programmes and I am impressed,’’ he said.
