Lagos businessman appears in court for allegedly stealing cashew nuts

Lagos, Jan. 26, 2017 (NAN) A Lagos-based businessman, Afeez Lazeez, who allegedly stole 650 bags of cashew valued at N40 million on Thursday, appeared in an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrates’Court.

The defendant, 31, who is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Fidelis Dike said the accused committed the offence in July and Sept.2016 at Mile 2, Estate market, Amuwo Odofin.

He said that the defendant conspired with others now at large to steal bags of cashew nuts, property of one Wale Arologun.

The prosecutor said that the offence against the accused contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that Section 285 prescribes three-year jail section 409, two-year jail for offenders respectively.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.T. Elias, granted the defendant to a bail of N5 million with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The magistrate said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show proof of evidence of tax payment.

He adjourned the case til Feb. 14 for mention.(NAN)
