Lagos Feb. 21, 2017 (NAN) National boxing chief coach Anthony Konyegwachie, on Wednesday said the ongoing National Boxing Championship was to discover new talents.

Konyegwachie made the assertion in an interview the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on the sidelines of the championship’s second day.

He said that the discovered boxers would be called to camp preparatory to the World Boxing Championship coming up in August in Germany and the Commonwealth Games next year.

“We have 28 bouts slated for the morning session where a lot of young boxers will try to prove their worth, while there will be more bouts in the evening.

“We will continue with more fights till the Feb. 26 where we will determine the finalists in each weight category,’’ Konyegwachie said.

“The target is to select the best boxers, it is a tedious affair because the boxers have great qualities and we have to be technical and careful in our selection process,’’ Koyegwachie said.

NAN reports that no fewer than 200 boxers in different weight categories are competing for honours.

Meanwhile Wasiu Taiwo, from Ondo State defeated Dauda Azeez, 4-1 to clinch the victory in their 49kg male bout, Yusuf Adedeji beat Sahhed Yinusa, 5-0 to win his bout in the 49kg male bout.

Also, Adeyemi Elijah from Kanu Nwakwo Boxing Club defeated Venus Asuquo, 5-0 to win the male 49kg, while Kehinde Akanmu beat Johgnson Udeme from Akwa-Ibom, 3-2 also in the 49 kg. (NAN)
