Kano, Jan. 26, 2017 (NAN) Kano State government will spend over N5 billion to construct 4, 128 shops at the popular Kantin Kwari market in Kano metropolis.
Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje made the announcement on Thursday in Kano at the foundation laying ceremony of the project.
He said that the project, to be executed under Private-Partnership arrangement, would be completed within five months.
He said the government would spend over N801 million to construct nine access roads, drainages and pedestrian walkway in the market.
The governor said that based on the arrangement, the traders were expected to build the shops, adding that two private developers had been engaged to execute the project.
“Kano is a centre of commerce not only in Nigeria but in Africa hence our decision to improve the market to boost business activities in the state,” he said.
According to Ganduje, no fewer than 3, 000 registered petty traders will be allocated shops in the market when the project is completed.
He called on traders, businessmen and women to ensure prompt payment of taxes to enable the government provide the much needed dividends of democracy.
Earlier in his remarks, Mr Bashir Adamu, Managing Director, State Urban Property Development Authority (KNUPDA), said the shops would be constructed at three different locations within the market.
He listed the locations to include Yan’tebur, Filin Fakin and layin kananan yan kasuwa.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, urged traders to ensure prompt payment of their Zakkat to sanitize their wealth inline with Sharia law. (NAN)
